This is the first of many new entries that will highlight the people and stories behind our little craft market. The HAHO has been working with the creative community for 5 years and constantly make adjustments to our organization based on vendor needs and continuing development. The month of March showcases the moment when we take a giant leap into continuing our service of providing resources to those turning their hobby into a business venture.
Denver Handmade Homemade launched a Kickstarter campaign today, giving everyone the opportunity to build something together and to develop the kind of city culture we want to see. It's easy for a big-box store to move in to a neighborhood (although it's increasingly tough to find that much land!) but takes much more time and effort to nurture small businesses that value locality, long-term prosperity, creativity and community engagement. Although the latter is what we truly desire, cheaper and more abundant goods produced from across the world are what we buy. Projects like this hope to not only make it easier to start a business but to also change people's minds about their purchasing power.
The HAHO looks to build a new network of creatives all working under the same roof. Whether someone makes kimchi or greeting cards, they can brainstorm and collaborate together. For the same reason we see artists paint and sculpt together in lofts and art spaces, the crafting community can have that refuge too. We picture it simply brimming with life!
All of this is to be umbrellaed by our Vendorship Program, which offers discounts to valuable goods and services, high-traffic selling opportunities twice a month at no charge, reduced commission rates to our developing webstore and of course a space to make it all happen!
Markets will be hosted there too, offering an entirely new kind of buying and selling atmosphere. Denvernites will be swinging by and purchasing items that were actually made in the building, and be able to see the maker's workspace and influences.
We hope you enjoy this series of posts, and look forward to what March will bring! Next up will be a letter from the founders, Matt Gettleman and Kylie Manson.
For the sake of community,
